Hi all,

I'm trying to move to Wisconsin, but am having a hard time getting a job. I'm mid-40's, and have been self employed for years. any advice?

Thanks,

Kimberly

Hello group,

How is everyone doing?

Here's wishing everyone a safe, healthy and joyous holiday season with well wishes for healthy and prosperous 2009!

Why did I join?

I am looking for ways t use my energy in networking and learning from one another on better approaches in location work and extra work. While I wish to maintain my private business, I also wish to locate gainful employment and to embrace such an opportunity to grow and advance.

With that in mind I am hoping to engage in healthy and stimulating dialogue in approaching avenue of employment lead generation, networking in concert with those who in position to provide of their skills and knowledge ways to go about improving ones employment outlook and avenues for employment.

Am I making any sense?

Thank you,

Jennifer Elisabeth Mendez

I Posted a blog here called "Being out to an employer can cost you a job "

In the future I will not show my female side because I fear I may lose my job if they know, the system isn't 100% with us yet.

I too am not out at work, but I will continue to transition. I believe the customer service women are catching on as my appearance has changed in recent weeks. Also I believe they are trans friendly but we will see. I will keep you posted.

I'm at Saint Louis University. I'd call it moderately trans-friendly: I've had two friends who transitioned, one MtF the other FtM, and both had good experiences; but they weren't faculty. I'm faculty; I've almost-not-quite transitioned, and probably won't go any further: For quite a few years here I've been notorious as "that male professor who wears women's clothes", but it's not got in the way of my promotion to full professor or election to various positions.

But my FtM friend specifically never asked for any medical benefits, not even testosterone. That bothers me, that he was afraid to rock the boat, in spite of his having good moral support of his supervisor, etc. I don't know what to do about it. Should I push for adding trans-related health benefits to the benefits plan? I don't think they're expressly ruled out; maybe it would be better not to draw attention to the issue, lest some administrator decide to turn "unspecified" into "specifically no".

Thanks for the invitation to join, Gretchen:)

Wow, as far as best practices go, I believe it's our responsibility to educate our employers, which is a never ending process. When I transitioned at my job, there was a lot of planning, etc. There are a lot of loose ends here as far as education/awareness go, but I'm pushing to have LGBT issues incorporated into a quantifiable metric for our company. Unfortunately, this sort of training has to be mandated before anyone is going to start paying attention to our plight.
